“There’s Only One Way to Go... and That’s Up”

There’s no question Connecticut’s design and construction industries have been seriously impacted by the recent economic downturn.  And while most experts agree that the economy in general has bottomed out and is mending slowly, Connecticut contractors and designers that have typically relied on the construction public market are still being forced to look at other markets for their work.

In 2011 and beyond state and local governments will face extraordinary deficits and little wiggle room to generate new revenues.  In the midst of such a frugal climate, how will the public construction market be affected?  How will decision-makers find the resources to maintain important investments in the state’s infrastructure and create jobs?  Will the trend continue to be away from expensive new construction projects and more toward renovations, additions, and deferred maintenance whenever possible?  What innovative and creative cost containment measures are public agencies implementing?  Is there light at the end of the tunnel, and if so, where is it?  Or is this the proverbial “new normal”?  These vital issues, and more, will be explored at the 2010 State of the State.

This year’s State of the State will focus on how public construction owners are dealing with managing their current capital programs while trying to plan for the future in less-than-robust economic conditions.  Representatives from the state’s public construction market will be on hand to provide reports on the scope and nature of their respective construction programs in 2011 and beyond.
