To kick off 2021, Construction Institute is proud to return our Leadership series. To ensure our communities remain safe, we're delivering these revolutionary workshops in online formats. Register today to develop strengths in conflict resolution, building change resiliency, business communication, sexual harassment prevention and more. Designed for working professionals, these workshops will enable you and your team to master necessary skills in an ever-changing work environment.

​Fundamentals of Effective Business Communication in Writing for Your World
​
Every business and industry needs skilled writers to communicate effectively with both internal and external events. This blended workshop provides participants with practical tools and strategies for writers to perform their required writing tasks more accurately, effectively and efficiently. Participants gain practical, hands-on experience in writing that is specific to their individual needs, and can work at a pace that fits their schedule.

Online modules open Tuesday, February 2, 2021. Live Instructor session through Zoom held Wednesday, February 24, 2021 from 9:30-11am.

Learning Objectives:
  • Understand the concept of audience/reader and perform a simple reader analysis.
  • Learn multiple strategies for adapting technical or expert information for audiences with less expertise.
  • Recognize and effectively use appropriate formats and channels for communication within an organization.
  • Revise written documents to produce clear, concise, readable prose.
  • Use tools such as PowerPoint and computer generated graphics effectively for both technical and non-technical audiences.

Beth Richards, Director of First- and Second-Year Writing Programs, University of Hartford

Beth Richards is clinical assistant professor in the Department of English and Modern Languages at the University of Hartford and director of the First- and Second-Year Writing programs. Before coming to UH she was a technical writer. In addition to writing for business and industry, she enjoys creative nonfiction; her work has been published in Fourth Genre, The Cincinnati Review, and a number of anthologies. 


Becoming a Problem Solver: Dealing with Conflict as a Normal Part of Business

This blended workshop enables participants to master problem-solving skills needed to cope with unexpected conflicts that arise during the course of doing business -- including a construction project. Participants begin the workshop with an on-demand learning module before attending a Live Instructor portion through Zoom with role playing exercises that are then discussed as a group. 

Online module opens Thursday January 14, 2021. Live Instructor session through Zoom held Thursday, January 21, 2021 from 9-11am.

Learning Objectives:
  • Learn how to approach business conflict as a problem-solver.
  • Learn how early awareness and intervention can improve both process and outcomes.
  • Learn to develop a collaborative problem solving team among key participants.
  • Practice strategies through role playing exercises and group discussion.

Nancy Greenwald, Construction Institute

Nancy Greenwald is the Executive Director of the Construction Institute. Ms. Greenwald has more than 37 years of experience in the industry as an attorney and a business executive, including as in-house counsel and CFO of a successful design-build company. Ms. Greenwald is a conflict management consultant and trainer, a mediator, and an arbitrator, lending her expertise to solve conflicts and to train others in effective problem-solving. She serves on the American Arbitration Association's Construction Industry Panel of Arbitrators as well as the AAA Mediation Panel. Ms. Greenwald speaks, writes and teaches frequently about construction best practices, dispute systems design, arbitration, mediation, and complex construction contracts. She is active on the American Bar Association’s Forum on Construction Law as well as the Dispute Resolution Section.

Negotiation and Conflict Resolution Skills You Can Use

This blended workshop provides an overview of why conflict feels stressful, how we can overcome the stress, and the importance of negotiation and conflict resolution skills in our personal and professional lives. Participants begin the workshop with an on-demand learning module before attending a Live Instructor portion through Zoom with role playing exercises that are then discussed as a group. 

Online module opens Thursday, February 4, 2021. Live Instructor session through Zoom held Thursday, February 11, 2021 from 9-11am.

Learning Objectives:
  • Learn how conflict affects us physically and mentally, as well as ways to overcome the stress.
  • Understand the importance of negotiation and conflict resolution in our personal and professional lives, and the connection between decision-making, negotiation, and conflict resolution.
  • Discuss the connection between decision-making, negotiation and conflict resolution.
  • Learn negotiation strategies through role playing exercises and group discussion.
