Moveable Bridge Engineering
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, at the University of Hartford, and the Construction Institute are offering a 1-day workshop for practicing engineers on the topic of movable bridges. This will be an in person workshop as well as streamed live for those who cannot attend. This workshop will cover the civil and structural engineering considerations of designing movable bridges.
It is assumed that workshop participants will have a background in structural engineering, but not specifically in the field of movable bridges. The workshop will include photos of movable bridges and bridge components to better illustrate the lecture material. Each student will receive copies of portions of the AREMA and AASHTO manual sections relating to movable bridges. NOTE: This session does not cover mechanical or electrical design. LEARNING OBJECTIVES 1. Learn the basics of movable bridges, both highway and railroad. 2. Discuss the current AREMA and AASHTO manual requirements regarding movable bridges. 3. Learn the civil and structural engineering process of designing movable bridges. 4. Learn the advantages and disadvantages of 3 types of movable bridges (vertical-lift, horizontal swing and bascule). |
