Ready, Fire, Aim: Mastering Preconstruction Planning

Ready, Fire, Aim: Strategic Preconstruction for AEC Professionals
In today’s volatile construction environment—marked by labor shortages, supply chain uncertainty, regulatory complexity, and escalating costs—effective preconstruction planning is a strategic advantage.
This Construction Institute course provides practical guidance for project managers, estimators, owners’ representatives, architects, and construction executives seeking to elevate their approach to budgeting, phasing, stakeholder communication, and risk allocation.
Participants will learn how to:
-
Align owner expectations with financial reality
-
Integrate constructability into design discussions
-
Identify and manage “ghost costs” and soft costs
-
Navigate funding schedules and regulatory approval timelines
-
Anticipate known and unknown project risks
Through candid case studies and field-tested examples, this session helps AEC professionals transform preconstruction from a procedural step into a leadership function.
Instructor
Gene Torone - Gene Torone recently retired as President of SLAM Construction Services and a Design Build Institute of America Fellow (FDBIA). He brings over 40 years of experience planning and managing construction projects, including 27 years managing design-build projects.
