Building the Next Generation
Building the Next Generation: How the Construction Institute is Helping Attract and Train Tomorrow’s AEC Workforce
The Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry is facing one of its greatest challenges yet — a rapidly retiring workforce and a shortage of new talent to take its place. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, nearly one in four construction workers is over the age of 55, and more than 40% of the current workforce is expected to retire within the next decade. To meet this challenge, the Construction Institute (CI) is actively leading the effort to attract, inspire, and train the next generation of AEC professionals.
Connecting Students to Industry Leaders
Since 2002, the Construction Institute has proudly supported the Construction Institute Student Organization (CISO) at the University of Hartford. Through mentoring, judging competitions, and informal discussions, CI members share real-world insights and career guidance with emerging professionals. This week, Johnny Medina, Co-Chair of CI’s Early Industry Leaders (EIL) group, together with Scott Tibbo of CBRE, will meet with students to discuss career pathways and the future of the industry — continuing a long tradition of direct engagement that helps students envision themselves in AEC careers.
Investing in the Pipeline
The Institute is also a continuing supporter of the ACE Mentor Program, providing both financial contributions and member participation. ACE connects high school students with professionals in architecture, construction, and engineering, offering hands-on exposure that has proven to increase interest in AEC careers. Studies by the ACE Mentor Program show that 70% of participants go on to major in AEC-related fields — a powerful return on investment for the future of our industry.
Partnering for Statewide Impact
Most recently, CI joined the AEC Workforce Action Team, a state-wide initiative bringing together industry associations, companies, and educators to identify actionable strategies for workforce development. This initiative is a part of the AEC Worforce Partnership, launched in 2024 by O&G Industries and the Northwest Regional Workforce Investment Board. The group’s goals include strengthening cross-sector partnerships and aligning training programs with real regional talent needs — ensuring that Connecticut’s AEC industry remains competitive and sustainable.
Training the Workforce of the Future
With so much experienced talent retiring, companies must look beyond their internal resources to provide effective training for new hires. That’s where the Construction Institute’s Professional Education Program comes in. CI offers a range of certificate programs in Construction Management, Project Management, and Facilities Management, all designed to equip emerging professionals with the practical knowledge and skills they need to succeed.
Many leading firms are already integrating CI’s programs into their onboarding and professional development plans, using these courses to accelerate the learning curve for newer employees and reinforce best practices across their organizations.
“We view training as an investment, not a cost. The Construction Institute helps us prepare our new employees to think like professionals from day one,” said one participating firm.
